Rehorst coat of arms

THE NAME REHORST

All the Rehorsts of Burgsteinfurt are descendants of a Rehorst farmer-family of Lengerich, Ringel. This farm was first mentioned in 1540 with the name Rhihorst. This name mutated to Rhehorst and than to Rehorst. The first part of the name (Rhi-, Rhe-, Re-) has the meaning of reed (germ.: Ried, Schilf). The second part (-hurst, -horst) characterizes a little hilly area with some brush. Obviously the name reflects the nature of the homestead: a dry hilly place surrounded by the marshy country of the Kattenvenner Moor.

Burgsteinfurt (below), just northwest of Munster.
